Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a custom made, tooth-shaped cap that fits over an existing tooth that is damaged. A tooth may require a crown when it is no longer strong enough to sustain proper function. Here are just some examples of why a tooth would need a crown:
1. Large areas of decay can lead to the need for dental crowns. Sometimes the cavity is so large that a filling would not adequately protect the tooth.
2. Old fillings that are failing can also necessitate a dental crown. If a tooth already has a large filling that covers more than half the tooth, the remaining structure is too weak to support chewing forces.
3. Another common tooth problem that can be fixed with crowns are cracks. When a tooth is fractured or cracked, a crown is the only way to keep a tooth crack from progressing. The crown functions as new enamel that will protectively cover the tooth.
4. Crowns are also needed after most root canal treatments. When a tooth has had a root canal, the nerve and blood supply are removed from the inside. The tooth is no longer receiving any nourishment and will become dried out and brittle. A crown placed over the tooth will allow for strength and stability allowing continued use of the treated tooth.
The process of having a crown will require two appointments.
The first appointment will consist of two impressions, shade matching, preparation of the tooth, and placing your temporary crown. The temporary crown will act as a barrier that will protect the exposed area of the tooth. It also prevents the prepared tooth from shifting out of place.
We will send the impressions of your tooth to our dental lab and they will fabricate your permanent crown. The fabrication of the crown usually takes two weeks to complete.
Once your crown is ready, the temporary crown will be gently removed and the tooth will then be thoroughly cleaned. Dr, Canal will then check proper placement of the new crown. Slight adjustments may be made at this time to ensure proper bite. After we have confirmed a perfect fit, we will permanently cement your crown into place during this second visit.
