Periodontal Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing (also known as a deep cleaning) is a non-surgical treatment to address periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is more commonly known as gum disease. Gum disease can have systemic implications as well. People with uncontrolled periodontal disease have two to three times the risk of a cardiovascular event (heart attack or stroke). Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria that has moved below the gum line and caused an infection.Â
Your body responds by sending immune cells to the area to fight the infection. Unfortunately, this leads to chronic inflammation that destroys the bone that holds your teeth in place. Your dental hygienist will treat the areas below your gums to remove plaque and tartar deposits in order to treat the infection. In some cases, antibiotics can be delivered directly below the gums to continue to kill any remaining bacteria long after the appointment has ended.
Our office will ensure you are comfortable throughout the entire procedure. Unless you have the plaque and tartar professionally removed, the bone loss will continue to progress and can lead to tooth mobility and eventually the loss of teeth. After the deep cleaning is complete, you will return to the office more frequently to ensure that the infection is under control and the bone loss has stopped.
